능소화 추억
왜 그런지는 몰라도, ‘능소화’에 대한 정감이 다른 어떤 꽃보다 더 하다. 능소화가 드리워진, 고즈넉한 옛 시절 정취를 간직한 돌담 집에 살고 싶었다. 하지만 그 꿈은 아직 이루지 못했다.
Memories of Chinese trumpet vine
I don’t know why, but I have a stronger feeling for ‘Chinese trumpet vine’ than any other flower. I wanted to live in a stone-walled house with a serene old-fashioned atmosphere with Chinese trumpet vine, but that dream has yet to come true.
500년 전 조선시대, 1000년 전 고려시대의 삶을 어려서부터 그리워했던 이유를 알 수는 없다. 그리고 돌담이 있는 99칸 방 기와집을 짓고 싶은 욕망, 그 근원이 어디인지도 불확실하다.
I can’t figure out why I longed for the life of the Joseon Dynasty 500 years ago and the Goryeo Dynasty 1000 years ago from a young age. And the origin of the desire to build a 99-room tiled house with stone walls is also unclear.
고대에서 현세에 떨어진 존재일까? 문인들은 꽃에 대해 읊었지만, 나는 꽃을 노래해 본 적이 없다. 나는 문인이 아닐 뿐더라, 능소화를 늘 감상하지도 않았다.

새삼스레 능소화가 내 맘을 끄는 것은, 아마 적어도 천 년 전에 나는 능소화가 드리워진 돌담 집에서 살았던 것 같다. 옛 시절에 능소화는 양반집에서만 키웠다고 하니, 아~ 나는 다행이 양반집 자제였나보다!

능소화에 대한 격조 높은 글은 찾지 못했다. 곳곳에 널부러진 글이 모두 대동소이한 것은 알려진 몇가지 사실을 베끼고 베껴서 일 것이다. 이는 천년의 세월을 드리운 능소화에 대한 예의는 물론 아니다.
I couldn’t find any dignified writings about Chinese trumpet vine. The reason that the writings scattered here and there are all the same is probably because some known facts were copied and copied. 보다 앞선 세대의 지식인, 언론인이자 역사학자, 독립운동가였던 호암(湖巖) 문일평(文一平, 1888-1939) 선생은 1930년대 펴낸 <화하만필(花下漫筆)>에서 꽃을 예찬했다.
Il-pyeong Moon (1888-1939), an intellectual, journalist, historian, and independence activist of an earlier generation, praised flowers in <Hwaha Manpil> published in the 1930s.
그곳에서 호암 선생은 “서울에 이상한 식물이 있는데 나무는 백송(白松)이요, 꽃은 능소화(凌霄花)”라고 적었다. 능소화가 이상한 것은 그만큼 희소했다는 것이리라!
There, Mr. Hoam wrote, “There is a strange plant in Seoul, the tree is white pine, and the flower is Chinese trumpet vine.” Chinese trumpet vine were considered strange, perhaps because they were so rare!
7월이 지나면 능소화는 싱싱한 채로 가지에서 떨어져 나간다. 그리고 결코 무너지지 않는 나의 기와집 돌담에 능소화가 다시 드리우면, 연분홍 저고리를 입은 어느 16세 소녀는 그곳에서 미소를 짓는다.
After July, Chinese trumpet vine fall off the branches while remaining fresh. And when the Chinese trumpet vine flowers again hang down on the stone wall of my tiled house that never collapses, a 16-year-old girl in a pale pink jacket smiles there.
천년 전 그곳에 그 소녀를 부끄러이 바라보는 내가 있었다!

Story of Travel
2022년 6월 23일, 아산시 외암 마을에서 촬영했습니다. 능소화는 원래 7월 초부터 피기 시작하는데 올해는 이상 기온으로 벌써 피었네요.
It was filmed on June 23, 2022 in Oeam Village, Asan City. Chinese trumpet vine originally started to bloom in early July, but this year it has already bloomed due to the unusually high temperature.
외암 마을은 500년 전 예안 이씨 일가가 낙향하여 살았던 곳입니다. 그의 후손들을 통해서 반촌의 면모를 갖추게 되고 지금의 민속 마을이 형성 되었다고 하죠.
Oeam Village is where the Yean Lee family returned to live 500 years ago. It is said that through his descendants, it became an aristocratic village, and later the present folk village was formed.
전통 가옥을 활용한 전통가옥 체험 및 민박을 운영하고 있습니다.

아산 외암 마을은 우리나라 건축양식을 고스란히 간직한듯 하네요. 마을이 고즈넉하니 좋아요

여기는 능소화 필때 사진 작가분들이 모델 데리고 많이 찍는 명소 자리기도 하죠. 담장 밑에 핀 능소화가 명소만큼 멋집니다

It is 2,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for others. Asan residents are free, and foreigners are free only on Mondays.
