Dancing Alone (8) – 미인이 입을 열지 않는 한, 행복은 깨지지 않는다.
Sitting in the Ramen mall office and eating ‘Samyang Cup Ramen,’ I reminisce about my time working in Manhattan three years ago. At that time, I ended up working in Manhattan, New York as a young American rookie, at an age that was not insignificant. I was setting up and managing an online shopping mall.
라멘몰 사무실에 앉아 ‘삼양 컵라면’을 먹으며 3년 전, 맨해튼에서 근무했던 당시를 회상한다. 그때 나는 적지 않은 나이에 미국 초년생으로 뜻하지 않게 뉴욕 맨해튼에서 일하게 되었다. 인터넷 쇼핑몰을 세팅하고 매니징하는 일이었다.
When it was lunchtime at my Manhattan workplace, I often ate ‘Samyang Cup Ramen.’ Samyang Ramen is the first instant noodle in Korea, so many people of that generation remember its taste. Currently, the best-selling ramen on Ramenmall.com is ‘Samyang Buldak Ramen.’ Ten out of the top 20 bestsellers are Samyang ramen. Although Nongshim Shin Black is the number one seller, when combined, Samyang Buldak Ramen is an absolute number one.
맨해튼 직장에서도 점심이 되면 ‘삼양 컵라면’을 자주 먹었다. 한국 최초의 라면은 삼양라면이다. 그래서 그 맛을 기억하고 있는 세대가 많다. 지금 라멘몰닷컴에서 가장 잘 팔리는 라면은 ‘삼양불닭면’이다. 베스트셀러 20위 안에 10개가 들어있다. 농심신블랙이 판매 1위이기는 하지만, 삼양불닭면을 합치면 삼양불닭면이 절대적인 1위이다.
I am a workaholic. I love working. It was the same in Manhattan. I arrive at the café at 6:25 am, and for $1.50, I receive a paper cup and mix warm milk into it. It’s been my routine for about three months. New York Manhattan’s mornings are warm compared to the low temperatures. Across the table, an elderly man with a thin, black hat and a white beard eats coffee and bread. His face looks weary but is filled with a smile, and he seems relieved, like finding shelter in the middle of a storm.
나는 워커홀릭이다. 일하는 것을 좋아한다. 맨해튼에서도 그랬다. 오전 6시 25분, 카페에 도착한다. 1 불 50센트에 종이컵을 받아 따뜻한 물에 찬 우유를 섞었다. 약 세 달 간 지속된 일상이다. 뉴욕 맨해튼의 아침은 낮은 온도에 비해 따뜻했다. 테이블 맞은 편에 검은 모자를 쓴 마른 얼굴, 흰 수염이 거칠게 자란 노년의 한 남자가 커피와 빵을 먹는다. 힘겨워 보이는 얼굴에 가득한 미소, 마치 폭풍 속에서 피난처를 찾은 것 같은 안도감이 보인다.
Wearing a khaki jacket, a black backpack, and taking a break while looking at an iPad on the table. Judging from the fact that he has been here for a few days, he might not be a tourist. Perhaps he could be a professional engineer working in Manhattan, different from what he appears to be at first glance.
카키색 재킷, 검은색 백팩 그리고 탁자 위 아이패드를 보며 휴식을 취한다. 요 며칠 이곳에 온 것으로 보아 여행객은 아닌 듯 하다. 어쩌면 보기와는 다르게 맨해튼에서 일하는 전문 직종의 엔지니어일 수 있다.
In Manhattan, it’s impossible to know people’s identity. It’s impossible to tell whether they are just passing by tourists, workers, or professional technicians. At least by their appearance alone.
맨해튼에서는 사람들의 정체를 알 수 없다. 단순히 지나가는 여행객인지, 노동자인지 아니면 전문직 테크니션인지 그들을 파악하는 것이 불가능하다. 적어도 겉 모습으로는 그렇다.
After three women in their thirties finished their simple meal and left the table behind, three women in their twenties sat down at the table on the right, enjoying their meal while chatting in Gyeongsang Province dialect. They seem to be on a trip to New York. This café is located on the right-hand side of the road leading to Korean Way from Manhattan Penn Station.
뒷편 테이블에 30대로 보이는 세 명의 여성분들이 간단한 식사를 마치고 나간 후, 우측 테이블에 세 명의 20대 여성이 앉았다. 경상도 사투리로 대화를 나누며 즐겁게 식사를 한다. 뉴욕에 여행을 온 듯 하다. 이 곳 카페는 맨해튼 펜스테이션 역에서 코리안웨이로 가는 도로 우측에 있다.
Right in front of the station is the Pennsylvania Hotel. It’s unclear whether the hotel guests have breakfast at this cafe, but early in the morning, both foreign and Korean travelers come here with coupons. Sometimes, people who come to the café bow and greet me. At first, I was confused, but I soon learned that they were Korean travelers who considered me as a fellow Korean and greeted me. When I receive a greeting, I also slightly rise and bow back to show my appreciation to the customer.
역 바로 앞에 펜실베니아 호텔이 있다. 이 호텔 투숙객이 이곳 카페에서 조식을 하는 것인지, 이른 아침에 외국인 여행객은 물론 한국인 여행자들도 쿠폰을 들고 이곳을 찾는다. 카페에 온 사람이 가끔 목례를 하며 인사를 건네온다. 처음에는 당황했으나, 이 분들이 같은 한국인 여행객으로 여기며 인사한다는 것을 금방 알았다. 인사를 받으면 나도 살짝 일어나 고객을 숙이며 답례를 한다.
At 7:30 am, I left the café with a colleague who I have coffee with every day and headed to the office. My office is located in Koreatown in Manhattan, just a 5-minute walk from the café. It’s been about 6 months since I started working here. I feel like I’m on the second train of my life, heading to an unknown destination. Wherever that place is, it will be the end of the line.
오전 7시 30분, 매일 같이 커피를 마시는 동료 한 사람과 카페를 떠나 사무실로 향했다. 사무실은 맨해튼 코리안 웨이에 있다. 카페에서 걸어서 5분 거리. 이곳에서 일한 지 약 6개월이 지났다. 어디로 갈지 모르는 인생의 두 번째 기차에 올라 알 수 없는 곳으로 가고 있다. 도착하는 그 곳이 종점일 것이다.
Although the work starts at 8:30 am, I arrive at the office around 7:30 am every day. I reside in Palisades Park, a Korean-American town in New Jersey, abbreviated as Pal Park. The entire broad avenue is filled with Korean shopping centers, and there are many Koreans in Pal Park, enough to elect a Korean mayor. I’m not sure how many Koreans are here exactly.
8시 30분 출근이지만 매일 7시 30분 경에 사무실에 도착한다. 거주하고 있는 곳은 뉴저지 한인타운 팰리세이즈 파크(Palisades Park)다. 줄여서 팰팍(Pal Park)이라 한다. 큰 거리(Broad Ave) 전체에 한인 상가가 즐비해 있고, 한국인이 시장에 당선될 만큼 팰팍시에는 한국인이 많다. 얼마나 많은지는 아직 정확히 모른다.
The express 166 bus from Manhattan to Palisades Park is mostly filled with Korean passengers, so there are quite a lot of them. If I take the bus and arrive at the Manhattan Bus Terminal (Port Authority) at around 5:30 AM, it takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to the cafe where I stay every day.
맨해튼에서 팰팍으로 오는 익스프레스 166번 50인승 버스 승객 대부분이 한국인이니까 많기는 무척 많다. 오전 5시 30분 경, 버스를 타고 맨하탄 버스터미널(Port Authority)에 도착하면 오전 6시 쯤이다. 걸어서 15~20분 정도면 내가 매일 머무는 바로 그 카페다.
In the early morning, I arrive alone at the office and listen to music quietly. Today, I listened to “Nostalgia” by stef2012bg, a YouTube artist. It is a beautiful piece of music with paintings of beautiful women in the background. The calm music and beautiful women opening the complicated morning in Manhattan bring peace to my mind.
이른 아침 나 홀로 사무실에 도착해 조용히 음악을 듣는다. 오늘은 stef2012bg라는 유튜버가 올린 ‘노스탤지어(Nostalgia)’ 를 들었다. 아름다운 여인들 페인팅 작품이 배경에 담긴 음악이다. 잔잔한 음악과 아름다운 여인들이 복잡한 맨해튼의 아침을 열며 마음의 평안을 준다.
If the saying “just looking at a beautiful woman can extend your life” by a certain German doctor is true, then I will continue to see beautiful women until I die. Even if they are just beautiful women in works of art. It is true that beauty brings joy, and joy is connected to happiness.
“미인을 보는 것만으로도 수명이 연장될 수 있다.”는 독일이 어느 박사의 그 말이 사실이라면, 나는 죽을 때까지 아름다운 여인을 볼 것이다. 그것이 미술 작품 속 미인일지라도 말이다. 아름다움이 즐거움을 주는 것은 사실이고, 즐거움은 행복으로 연결된다.
As long as my beauty remains silent, the happiness I feel will never be broken. Feeling wisdom can bring greater happiness than beauty, but I prefer the happiness I feel in ‘beauty.’ The cool breeze carries the scent of coffee through Manhattan.
나의 미인이 입을 열지 않는 한, 내가 느끼는 행복은 결코 깨지지 않을 것이다. 아름다움 보다 지혜로움을 느끼는 것이 더 행복할 수 있다. 하지만 나는 ‘아름다움’에서 느끼는 행복감이 좋다. 서늘한 바람을 따라 맨해튼에 커피향이 흩날린다.
