India’s Economy Is Accelerating—But What Is Fueling It?
New Delhi | August 17, 2026
India’s economy is moving fast. Growth remains strong, exports are rising, and carmakers have just reported their best July ever. But beneath that momentum lies a growing dependence on imported energy—particularly Russian oil.
In July, India’s imports of Russian crude reached a record high for the second consecutive month. They climbed to about 2.8 million barrels a day, accounting for roughly 55.5 percent of the country’s total crude imports.
The shift reflects more than discounted prices. Conflict in the Middle East has disrupted supplies and increased global energy costs. Russia’s share of India’s oil market rose to 43.25 percent between April and July, while the Middle East’s share fell to about 30 percent.
India imports more than 90 percent of the oil it consumes. It also relies on imports for nearly 65 percent of its liquefied petroleum gas. In response, the government has ordered 21 energy companies to prepare for combined LPG production of up to 63,810 tonnes a day.
So far, the broader economy remains resilient. Economists expect India’s real GDP to grow 7.3 percent in the April–June quarter, supported by consumer spending, exports and government investment.
July merchandise exports jumped 19.63 percent from a year earlier to $44.24 billion. Passenger vehicle shipments also rose 34 percent to 457,810 units, the highest July figure on record.
Yet the risks are becoming harder to ignore. Imports grew even faster, pushing the trade deficit to $31.98 billion. India’s economy is accelerating—but much of the machine still runs on fuel purchased from an increasingly uncertain world.
