The Sheep That Fixed a Roof
How a small mission in Samburu turned charity into lasting opportunity
About 300 kilometers north of Nairobi, in Kenya’s Samburu region, many families live with roofs that leak during the rainy season. A repaired roof can change a family’s daily life, but repairing every home through donations alone is impossible.
So a small Christian mission tried a different idea. Instead of repairing each house only with outside support, missionaries Peter Yoon and Emma Choi helped build a Sheep Bank for the Samburu community. The ministry purchases sheep, raises them together, and uses the profits to fund roof repairs for local families.
The model is simple. The original investment is used to purchase more sheep, while the income from the flock is used for practical needs. In Samburu, that means repairing leaking roofs. Over time, one flock can help many homes.
The Sheep Bank treats livestock not simply as aid, but as a growing community asset. Its profits can support home repairs, scholarships, poverty relief, and local church self-reliance.
This approach matters because it does not depend only on the next donation. It creates a system that can continue working after the first gift is given.
For Peter Yoon and Emma Choi, the goal is not only to repair houses. It is to help communities find a path toward dignity and self-reliance.
A repaired roof protects one family for years. But a growing flock may protect many families for generations.
Sometimes compassion is not solving a problem once. It is creating a way for hope to multiply.
