South Korea’s presence in southern Kazakhstan is expanding beyond trade. A new relationship is taking shape through artificial intelligence education, proposed industrial projects and Korean television’s growing influence on international travel.
Officials in the Kyzylorda Region recently discussed expanding cooperation with South Korea in investment, manufacturing and advanced technology. Trade between the region and South Korea reached $1.2 million in 2025 and continues to grow.
The most visible partnership is an AI school established by Seoul National University of Science and Technology at Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University. According to regional officials, it is Kazakhstan’s first artificial intelligence school and currently enrolls 225 students.
Another 128 students are expected to join during the next academic year. The program reflects Kazakhstan’s effort to attract branches and academic programs from major foreign universities while developing its own generation of technology specialists.
Cooperation may soon extend from classrooms to factories. Regional officials said discussions are underway with Korean companies on expanding the production of raw materials. Proposals for a window-manufacturing facility and a trade and logistics center are also being considered.
Meanwhile, Korean popular culture is opening a different route into Kazakhstan. The Korean reality program Home Alone filmed at Almaty Airport, Kok-Tobe, Green Bazaar, Arbat Street and Kaindy Lake. Travel footage featuring broadcaster Jun Hyun-moo surpassed 500,000 views, drawing positive reactions from Korean audiences.
About 23,000 South Korean tourists visited Almaty in 2025. No single development represents a major geopolitical shift. Together, however, these changes reveal how South Korea’s connection with Central Asia is evolving—from entertainment and tourism toward education, technology, production and long-term partnership.
