영화에서 간혹 등장했던 관동대학살 사건을 기억할 것입니다. 간토 대학살(關東大虐殺) 혹은 관동 대학살은 1923년 일본 도쿄도 등을 포함한 간토 지방에서 발생한 간토 대지진 혼란의 와중에서 일본 민간인과 군경에 의하여 조선인을 대상으로 벌어진 무차별적인 대량 학살 사건입니다. ‘간토 대지진 조선인 학살 사건'(關東大地震朝鮮人虐殺事件) 또는 ‘1923년 조선인 대학살’이라고도 불리며 희생자 수는 약 6,000여 명에 달하는 것으로 알려졌으나, 이후 추가 자료가 발굴되면서, 희생자가 약 2만 3,058명이라는 주장이 제기되었습니다.
재난에 따른 내부의 정치-사회적 불만을 무마하기 위해 소수자들에 대한 증오를 선동, 희생양으로 삼았다는 점에서 고대 로마 대화재 당시 네로의 그리스도교 신자 박해와 비슷하며, 좀 더 가까운 시기로는 나치 독일이 유대인들을 상대로 자행했던 수정의 밤 사건과도 유사합니다.
