Sejong the Great Cultural Heritage Management Office of the Cultural Heritage Administration will hold a commemorative ceremony, called the “Sungmojejeon,” on May 15th at 11 a.m. at the Sejong the Great Royal Tomb in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province to celebrate the 626th anniversary of King Sejong’s birth. The Sungmojejeon is an event to honor the birthday of King Sejong, who is revered as the greatest monarch in Korean history for his outstanding achievements in various fields such as Hangul creation, defense, science, and art.
The Sungmojehyang, which takes place at the main hall of the Sejong the Great Royal Tomb, includes rituals such as the offering of wine and food, the reading of congratulatory messages by officials, the laying of flowers and offering of incense by the head of the Cultural Heritage Administration on behalf of the president, a speech, and performances of the “Yeominrak” court music and “Bongraeui” court dance, which King Sejong composed to praise the founding of Joseon Dynasty.
In addition to the Sungmojehyang, a performance of the intangible cultural heritage “Jultagi,” a traditional tightrope walking and storytelling, will be held at the Sejong the Great Royal Tomb at noon on the same day. Until July 16th, a special exhibition called “Cheonha Myeongdang, Yeongneung” will introduce the location of Yeongneung, which is evaluated as the best Pungsu site among the royal tombs in Korea. In honor of King Sejong’s birthday, the Yeongneung of Sejong the Great and Yeongneung of Hyojong the Great will be open to the public free of charge on May 15th, despite it being a regular holiday. Sejong the Great Cultural Heritage Management Office of the Cultural Heritage Administration plans to continue holding the Sungmojejeon to commemorate King Sejong’s birth and to promote his values and accomplishments to all Koreans.
15일 세종대왕 탄신 626돌 기념 숭모제전 거행
문화재청 궁능유적본부 세종대왕유적관리소(소장 박판용)는 오는 15일 오전 11시부터 경기도 여주시 세종대왕 영릉(英陵, 세종과 소헌왕후)에서 세종대왕 탄신 626돌을 기념하는 숭모제전(崇慕祭典)을 개최한다.

숭모제전은 한글 창제를 비롯하여 국방, 과학, 예술 등 여러 방면에서 빛나는 업적을 남겨 역사상 가장 위대한 성군으로 추앙받고 있는 세종대왕의 탄신일(양력 5월 15일)을 기리는 행사이다.
세종대왕릉 정자각에서 거행되는 숭모제향(崇慕祭享)은 ▲ 헌관(1)의 분향(2)과 헌작(2) ▲ 축관(祝官)의 축문 낭독 ▲ 문화재청장의 대통령 명의 화환 헌화와 분향 ▲ 축사 ▲ 세종대왕이 지은 궁중음악인 ‘여민락(與民樂)’ 연주와 궁중무용 ‘봉래의(3)’ 공연의 순서로 진행된다.
(1) 헌관(初獻官): 제향 때에 잔을 올리는 일을 맡아보던 제관
(2) 분향(焚香): 향을 피움, 헌작(獻爵): 술잔을 올림
(3) 봉래의(鳳來儀): 조선의 창업을 찬양하고 나라의 평안과 국운의 번창을 기원하는 의미를 담은 궁중무용으로, 세종대왕이 태조의 공덕을 칭송하며 지은 춤
숭모제향 외에 15일 정오 세종대왕릉에서는 줄 위를 걸으며 곡예와 재담을 펼치는 무형문화유산 ‘줄타기’ 공연이 열리고, 풍수학상 국릉(國陵) 가운데 제일인 능으로 평가 받는 여주 영릉(英陵)의 입지를 소개하는 ‘천하 명당, 영릉(英陵)’ 기획전도 오는 7월 16일까지 관람할 수 있다. 15일은 정기휴일인 월요일이지만 세종대왕의 탄신을 기리는 취지로 세종대왕릉 영릉(英陵)과 효종대왕릉 영릉(寧陵)을 특별히 무료로 개방한다.
문화재청 궁능유적본부 세종대왕유적관리소는 앞으로도 숭모제전을 통해 모든 국민이 다 함께 세종대왕의 탄생을 기념하고, 세종대왕의 업적과 가치를 계승하기 위해 힘써 나갈 계획이다.
