Where Was the Church That Day?
"Holy Week: The Sin We Share, The Guilt of Our Age"

As we enter Holy Week, we meditate on the cross of Jesus Christ.
Jesus was despised, rejected, and wounded.
And the Scripture tells us the reason:

“그가 찔림은 우리의 허물을 인함이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악을 인함이라 그리 징계를 받음으로 우리가 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 입었도다” (이사야 53:5) “But He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

This confession is not merely a message to our individual hearts.
It is a sacred question directed at our collective guilt—the sins of our time and of our community.

The Suffering of Jesus: Beyond My Sin, Toward Our Sin

When we meditate on the cross, we often focus on our personal sins.
But Scripture speaks of “our transgressions” and “our iniquities.”
The Lord bore not only individual sins, but also the structural sins of society, the sin of passive silence, and the complicity hidden in that silence.

The Suffering of December 3rd – Where Was the Church That Day?

On December 3rd of last year, Korea experienced a shocking crisis.
The president’s illegal plan to impose martial law and mobilize the military was exposed—an attempted coup that threatened the constitutional order.

Yet on that day, and in the days that followed, many churches and Christians remained silent.
Some even endorsed or justified the incident.
Certain pastors stood on the side of power, labeling the people’s call for democracy as “chaos,” rationalizing oppression in the name of order, and in some cases even inciting violence.

This is the very sin that we, as the Body of Christ, must face during Holy Week.
Before we blame Peter for denying Jesus three times, we must look back and reflect on how today’s Korean Church has chosen the path of power over the way of Christ.

The Cross Is Not a Tool of Power

The cross was once a Roman instrument of death, but the Lord turned it into a symbol of salvation.
Yet today’s Church at times uses the cross as a mere ornament to justify power.
The suffering of Jesus was love shown alongside the weak, but we often distort that love to serve our own agendas.

Holy Week must become a time when we, as a community, repent of our compromised faith, of our silence, and of our failure to stand with truth and with the oppressed.

On the Day of Removal, God Was Still at Work

Not long ago, the Constitutional Court of South Korea ruled to remove the president from office.
Upon hearing the news, many people said:
“We survived. It feels like we’ve been set free.”

This was not merely the joy of a political victory. It was the answer to the tears and prayers of those who cried out to God from within oppression.
Just as God did not let the suffering of Jesus end in vain, but raised Him in glory, so too, in our time, God is showing us that truth and justice will not be defeated.

The Call of Holy Week – Repentance and Restoration

As we stand before this Word, we must confess:

“Lord, forgive my silence.
I repent for siding with power out of convenience.
Lead me into a life that shares in Your suffering.”

The cross is not merely a symbol of comfort.
It is a place of commitment— to suffer with Christ, to speak the truth, and to stand alongside the oppressed.

기도 Prayer

Suffering Lord,
You were pierced and rejected, and You bore our pain in our place.
그 고난 속에서 우리를 향한 사랑을 끝까지 놓지 않으셨습니다. comEven in Your agony, You never let go of Your love for us.unity

Lord, our nation has also walked through many seasons of suffering.
Among them were moments when we remained silent, and times when the Church chose power over truth in its foolishness.

Lord, You heard the cries of those who prayed in the darkness of December 3rd, and now You have caused justice to flow like a river.
Yet we ask Your forgiveness for the sins of our indifference and our silence.

In this Holy Week, help us stand truthfully before the cross of Christ. Lead us back to repentance and to the true heart of the gospel.

Lord who has overcome suffering,
May Your justice, peace, and the way of life be restored in this land.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
