The MinKwon Center and the Asia Pacific American Voter Empowerment (APA VOICE) Redistricting Task Force met with New York State Senator Iwen Chu last week. At the meeting held at the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) office, the MinKwon Center and APA VOICE conveyed the demands of the Asian community ahead of the upcoming redistricting of the New York State Assembly.
The New York State Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) is currently redrawing the map of the state assembly districts following a court order. In response, Korean and Asian community residents are joining forces with the MinKwon Center and APA VOICE to demand that the districts in heavily populated Korean and Asian areas, including Flushing, should not be separated. Our community has the right to have political representation.
The new districts for the New York State Assembly must be drawn in a way that represents and respects the needs of Korean, Asian, and vulnerable communities. Communities with similar interests should not be separated or scattered.
This is necessary so that we can elect representatives who will properly convey our voices in the legislature and carry out legislative activities. Through this, we can strive to strengthen the political power of the Korean and Asian communities. The MinKwon Center will continue to work hard to ensure that the Korean and Asian communities can properly voice their opinions during the redistricting process.

민권센터와 아태계정치력신장연맹(APA VOICE) 선거구 재조정 대책위원회는 지난주 이웬 추 뉴욕주 상원의원(사진 왼쪽 3번째)과 만났습니다. 중국계미국인기획협회(CPC) 사무실에서 열린 이날 모임에서 민권센터와 APA VOICE는 다가오는 뉴욕주하원 선거구 재조정을 앞두고 아시안 커뮤니티의 요구를 전달했습니다.
뉴욕주의회 선거구 재조정 활동
현재 뉴욕주독립선거구재조정위원회(IRC)는 법원의 명령에 따라 뉴욕주하원 선거구 지도를 다시 그리고 있습니다. 이에 한인과 아시안 커뮤니티 주민들이 민권센터, APA VOICE와 함께 나서 플러싱을 비롯 한인과 아시안 인구가 밀집된 지역의 선거구를 분리하지 말 것을 요구하고 있습니다. 우리 커뮤니티는 정치적 대표를 가질 권리가 있기 때문입니다.
새 뉴욕주하원 선거구는 반드시 한인과 아시안 그리고 취약 계층 커뮤니티의 이해를 대변하고 존중하는 방향으로 그려져야 합니다. 같은 이해관계를 가진 커뮤니티를 분리하거나, 흩어지게 만들어서는 안됩니다.
그래야만 우리의 목소리를 주의회에서 제대로 전달하며 입법활동을 펼치는 의원을 선출할 수 있기 때문입니다. 이를 통해 한인과 아시안 커뮤니티의 정치력 신장을 꾀할 수 있습니다. 민권센터는 한인과 아시안 커뮤니티가 선거구 재조정 과정에서 목소리를 제대로 낼 수 있도록 계속 땀흘릴 것입니다.
