기쁜 소식을 알립니다. 최근 확정된 뉴욕주정부 예산안에 한인사회를 비롯한 아태계 커뮤니티를 위한 예산 3000만 달러가 책정됐습니다. 민권센터는 여러 커뮤니티 단체들과 함께 아태계 공정예산연맹을 결성하고 주정부에 아태계 커뮤니티를 위한 6650만 달러를 요구해왔습니다. 비록 요구한 예산의 절반 정도만 책정됐지만 그래도 큰 성과를 얻은 것입니다.
공정예산연맹은 (1) 100여 아태계 커뮤니티 단체들의 주민 서비스를 위해 4000만 달러 (2) 뉴욕주 아태계커뮤니티개발재단에 500만 달러 (3) 코비드19가 아태계 주민들의 건강에 미치는 장기적 영향을 연구, 홍보, 교육하기 위한 예산 500만 달러 (4) 아태계 커뮤니티 데이타 확보와 분석을 위한 기금 500만 달러 (5) 아태계 역사 교재 마련을 위한 기금 200만 달러 책정 등을 촉구하고 최초의 뉴욕주 아태계 사무국 설치도 요구했습다.
민권센터와 공정예산연맹은 이 성과를 이뤄낸 커뮤니티 단체들과 힘을 보태준 론 김/그레이스 이 뉴욕주 하원의원, 존 리우 뉴욕주 상원의원 등에게 감사의 뜻을 전합니다.
앞으로 더 구체적인 예산 내용이 밝혀지면 3000만 달러가 한인과 아태계 커뮤니티를 위해 어떻게 쓰일지 설명드리겠습니다.
한편 뉴욕주 정치 매체 시티&스테이트가 매년 선정해 발표하는 《다양성의 힘, 뉴욕에서 가정 정치적 영향력이 큰 아시안 100명》에 올해도 민권센터 존 박 사무총장(사진)이 37위로 이름을 올렸습니다.
시티&스테이트는 “민권센터는 플러싱에서 취약계층 주민들을 지원하는 가장 왕성한 활동을 펼치는 커뮤니티 단체 가운데 하나로 성장했다”고 설명했습니다. 그리고 “뉴욕시가 플러싱에 있던 유일한 식량지원단체를 폐쇄한 뒤, 이 사태에 대처하기 위해 플러싱식량지원협의회를 만들었으며 ‘드리머 장학금’을 설립해 서류미비 학생들을 지원하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
민권센터가 이와 같은 인정을 받게 된 것은 한인사회의 끊임없는 후원과 격려 덕분입니다. 고맙습니다.
New York State Budgets $30 Million for Asian Pacific Communities
Good news! The recently finalized budget for the New York State government includes a budget of $30 million for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, including the Korean American community. The MinKwon (Civil Rights) Center, together with several community organizations, formed the AAPI Fair Budget Coalition and had demanded $66.5 million from the government for the AAPI community. While only about half of the requested budget was granted, it is still a significant achievement.
The Fair Budget Coalition advocated for a budget of $40 million for over 100 AAPI community organizations for resident services, $5 million for the New York State AAPI Community Development Foundation, $5 million for researching, promoting, and educating on the long-term effects of COVID-19 on AAPI residents’ health, $5 million for data collection and analysis for the AAPI community, and $2 million for developing AAPI history textbooks. The Coalition also requested the establishment of the first New York State AAPI office.
The Civil Rights Center and the Fair Budget Coalition express their gratitude to community organizations and lawmakers such as Ron Kim/Grace Lee, a member of the New York State Assembly, and John Liu, a member of the New York State Senate, for their support.
We will explain how the $30 million will be allocated for the Korean and AAPI communities when more detailed budget information is revealed.
City & State explained that the MinKwon Center has grown to become one of the most active community organizations supporting vulnerable residents in Flushing. City & State also stated that after New York City closed the only food pantry in Flushing, they created the Flushing Food Collaborative to address the situation and established the ‘Dreamer Scholarship’ to support undocumented students.
