민권센터와 아태계정치력신장위원회(APA VOICE) 선거구 재조정 대책위원회는 지난 14일(금)에도 뉴욕주의원과 온라인으로 만났습니다. 이번에는 오클랜드가든스와 리치몬드힐 등 퀸즈에 선거구가 있는 데이빗 웨프린 뉴욕주 하원의원을 만나 한인과 아시안 커뮤니티의 선거구 재조정에 대한 입장을 전했습니다. 웨프린는 민권센터가 올해 뉴욕주하원 선거구 재조정과 관련해 만난 다섯 번째 의원입니다.
The MinKwon (Civil Rights Center) and the Asia-Pacific American Voter Empowerment (APA VOICE) redistricting task force met with New York State Assemblyman David Weprin, who represents Queens districts including Oakland Gardens and Richmond Hill, online on Friday, the 14th, to discuss the position of the Korean and Asian communities on redistricting. Weprin is the fifth lawmaker the Civil Rights Center has met with this year regarding New York State Assembly redistricting.
웨프린 의원과 뉴욕주하원 선거구 재조정 토론
뉴욕주 아시안 인구는 이제 뉴욕주에서 11%, 뉴욕시에서 15%를 차지하는 등 급격한 속도로 늘고 있습니다. 지난 10년간 아시안 인구는 퀸즈에서 29%, 브루클린에서 43%나 늘었습니다. 이와 같은 증가가 반드시 선거구 재조정에 반영돼 한인과 아시안 인구가 집중된 선거구를 유지, 확대해야 합니다.
The Asian population in New York State is now rapidly increasing, accounting for 11% of the population in the state and 15% in New York City. Over the past 10 years, the Asian population has increased by 29% in Queens and 43% in Brooklyn. This growth must be reflected in the redistricting process to maintain and expand districts where Korean and Asian populations are concentrated.
선거구 재조정은 공직자 선출과 함께 정부 정책 결정과 예산 지원의 기초가 됩니다. 뉴욕주하원 선거구 재조정안은 오는 4월 말 주의회에 상정됩니다. 민권센터와 APA VOICE는 선거구가 한인과 아시안 커뮤니티를 위해 공정하게 그려지도록 계속 노력할 것입니다.
Redistricting is the foundation of government policy making and budget support, along with the election of public officials. The New York State House redistricting plan will be presented to the Assembly at the end of April. The Civil Rights Center and APA VOICE will continue to strive for fair representation of the Korean and Asian communities in the districting process.
