뉴욕과 뉴저지 민권센터는 꾸준히 이민자 권익을 위한 의원 로비와 아시안 커뮤니티 선거 참여 운동을 펼치고 있습니다.

뉴저지 민권센터는 여러 이민자 단체 대표들과 함께 계속해서 주의원들과 온라인으로 만나 이민자 권익을 위한 법안 지지를 촉구하고 있습니다. 지난 주에도 주하원의원 두 명을 만나 (1) 한국어 등 15개 국어로 주정부 서비스를 제공하는 ‘언어서비스법안(Language Access Bill/S2459) (2) 서류미비자를 비롯 이민자들이 신분에 관계 없이 추방 위협을 받지 않고 주정부나 지방 정부에 건강, 교육, 삶의 질 향상을 위한 공공서비스 지원과 보호를 요청할 수 있도록 하는 ‘이민자 보호법안(Values Act Bill/S512/A1986)’ 지지를 요청했습니다.
온라인 모임에 함께한 뉴저지 민권센터 김성원 프로그램 매니저(사진 가운데 줄 왼쪽)는 “지난 주에 만난 두 명의 의원 가운데 린다 카터 의원(사진 아랫 줄 가운데)은 이들 법안을 지지하는 입장을 밝혔다”고 전했습니다. 지난해 12월 문을 연 뉴저지 민권센터는 주의회와 정부를 상대로 한 권익 활동에 적극 나서고 있습니다. 특히 NJ 버겐카운티의 한인과 아시안 이민자 권익 운동을 강화하고, 라틴계를 비롯한 타민족 이민자 커뮤니티와의 연대를 위해 힘을 쏟고 있습니다.

어제(24일) 민권센터가 이끌고 있는 아태계정치력신장연맹(APA VOICE)은 맨해튼 차이나타운 매니 캔터 교육연맹 센터에서 뉴욕시의원 1선거구 후보 토론회를 열었습니다. 우실라 정(민주), 수잔 리(민주), 크리스토퍼 마테(민주), 헬렌 큐이(공화), 푸이 스튜어트(민주) 5명 후보가 참석해 질문에 답하며 정책과 공약을 밝혔습니다. 이날 사회는 한인 2세인 뉴욕 ABC 방송 김세환 리포터가 맡아서 진행했으며 150여 명이 참석해 후보자들의 입장을 들었습니다.
민권센터와 APA VOICE는 오는 6월 3일(토) 뉴욕시의원 19선거구 후보 토론회도 개최합니다.

New Jersey Immigrant Rights Lobby and New York City Council Candidate Debate
New Jersey Civil Rights Center, along with several immigrant organizations, continues to advocate for immigrant rights by urging legislators through online meetings. Last week, they met with two members of the State Assembly, expressing support for two bills: the Language Access Bill (S2459), which provides government services in 15 languages, including Korean, and the Values Act Bill (S512/A1986), which ensures that immigrants, regardless of their immigration status, can request support and protection from the state or local government for health, education, and quality of life improvements without the threat of deportation.
Kim Sung-won, Program Manager of the New Jersey Civil Rights Center (pictured in the middle of the left row) who participated in the online gathering, stated, “Among the two legislators we met last week, Representative Linda Carter (pictured in the middle of the bottom row) expressed her support for these bills.” Since December last year, the New Jersey Civil Rights Center has actively engaged in advocacy efforts with the State Legislature and government. They have particularly strengthened the movement for Korean and Asian immigrant rights in NJ Bergen County and dedicated efforts to solidarity with immigrant communities, including the Latinx community.
The APA VOICE (Asia Pacific American Voting and Political Empowerment) led by the Center for Civil Rights held a debate for the 1st District City Council candidates in New York City at the Manhattan Chinatown Manny Cantor Education Center yesterday (24th). Five candidates, Woo Silla (Democratic), Susan Lee (Democratic), Christopher Mateo (Democratic), Helen Qiu (Republican), and Pui Stewart (Democratic), attended the event to answer questions and present their policies and promises. The debate was hosted by Kim Sehwan, a second-generation Korean-American reporter from New York ABC, and over 150 people attended to hear the candidates’ positions.
The MinKwon Center and APA VOICE will also be hosting a debate for the candidates running for the 19th District of the New York City Council on Saturday, June 3rd.
