LA총영사(김영완)는 “한·미 동맹 70주년을 기념하여 L.A 카운티 등 인근 지역 통합교육구 및 학교와 파트너십을 맺고 고등학생들을 대상으로 한국을 알리고 국제적 감각을 기르는 My Global Korea* 프로그램을 추진 중인바, 그 첫 번째 학교로 L.A.통합교육구에 소재한 Ambassador School of Global Leadership 고등학생들을 대상으로 올해 3월부터 5월에 걸쳐 7차례 진행된 강의 시리즈를 성황리에 마쳤다.”고 밝혔다.
My Global Korea는 ‘k-pop, K-movie, K-cuisine 등 한국의 문화’, ‘한국의 근현대 발전사’ ‘한국의 정치사회 이슈’, ‘영사단 및 외교의 세계’, ‘한국유학 및 취업기회’ 주제로 구성된 강의 시리즈이다.
특히 지난 5월 31일(수)에는 학생발표 및 시상식이 있었다. 우수 학생들에게는 총영사 명의의 상장이 주어졌으며, L.A.시의 리사 살라자(Lisa Salazar, General Manager, Youth Development Department)가 참여하여 학생들에게 격려사를 하였다.
학생들은 “K-pop을 비롯한 한국의 역사·문화를 통해 한국을 깊게 이해하게 되었고, 한국 유학을 진지하게 고려해 보는 계기가 되었다”라고 밝혔다.
김총영사는 “평범함(ordinary)에서 특정 관심분야를 마스터하는 비범함(extraordinary)에 이르기 위해서는 시야를 넓혀 조금 더 멀리(extra mile) 가야 하며, 동 프로그램이 그 비범함에 이르게 해 주는 기회가 될 것임”을 강조하였다.
L.A총영사관은 L.A.시 지역을 넘어 2023년 가을학기부터는 글렌데일 및 오렌지 카운티 지역의 통합교육구 학교 등과 프로그램을 지속적으로 진행할 계획이다.
Lecture series on introducing Korea to local high school students (My Global Korea completion and award ceremony to be held)
LA Consul General (Kim Young-wan) announced that as part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the ROK-US alliance, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in LA has been conducting the “My Global Korea” program in partnership with the Los Angeles County Unified School District and nearby schools. The program aims to promote Korea and cultivate international awareness among high school students.
The first school to participate in the program was the Ambassador School of Global Leadership in the LA Unified School District. From March to May of this year, a series of lectures were successfully conducted, covering various topics such as “Korean culture including K-pop, K-movie, and K-cuisine,” “Modern and contemporary history of Korea,” “Political and social issues in Korea,” “The world of diplomacy and consulates,” and “Studying and job opportunities in Korea.”
Notably, on May 31st, a student presentation and award ceremony took place. Outstanding students were awarded certificates in the name of the Consul General, and Lisa Salazar, the General Manager of the Youth Development Department of the City of LA, participated in the event to encourage the students.
The students expressed their gratitude, stating, “Through learning about Korean history and culture, including K-pop, we have gained a deeper understanding of Korea, and it has motivated us to seriously consider studying in Korea.”
Consul General Kim emphasized, “To go from being ordinary to extraordinary in mastering a specific field of interest, one needs to broaden their perspective and go the extra mile. This program will provide an opportunity for students to achieve that extraordinary level.”
Looking ahead, the LA Consulate General plans to continue the program not only in the LA area but also in Glendale and Orange County school districts starting from the fall semester of 2023.
