우리가족은 2004년부터 중국 북경에 살았다. 큰 아이는 5살이었고 작은 아이는 2006년에 태어났다. 어느덧 세월은 흘러 2018년 8월이 되었고, 중국 북경에 산 지 14년의 생활을 정리하고 이곳 일본 동경에 오게 되었다.
“아이들아, 잘 참아주어서 고맙다.”
사업적 기반도 없었고 아는 이도 없었다. 그리고 심지어 일본이란 나라를 밟아 본 처음의 여정이었다. 가족 어느 누구도 일본어를 아는 이가 없어 의사소통의 문제로 아픈 경우 병원가기도 힘들었다. 아이들의 충격은 더 컸다. 큰 아이는 고등학교 3학년 2학기, 작은 아이는 초등학교 6학년 2학기 때 오게되어 학교 문제와 입시 문제에 직면했다.
지금 2023년 일본 온지 5년이 다 되어간다. 큰 아이는 잘 적응하여 당당히 와세다대학 정치경제학부에 입학하여 지금은 군 복무 중이며 작은 아이는 동경한국학교 고등부 2학년이다. 큰 아이는 당시 일본학교에 들어 갈 수가 없어 크리스챤 영어학교에 들어가서 영어를 본격적으로 학습하여 SAT와 Tofle을 고득점하여 대학에 입학하였다.
작은 아이는 일본 초등학교에 입학 후, 일본 중학교 그리고 지금은 한국학교 고등부에 다닌다. 작은 아이는 갑작스런 일본 이주에 북경의 친구들과 변변한 송별회도 갖지 못하고, 한마디도 모르는 일본학교 생활을 하면서 자신이 얼마나 힘들었는 지 토로하였다.
아이들은 낯선 땅에서 낯선 언어와 문화에서 생존하며 살았다. 중국학교에서도 마찬가지로 견뎌 냈듯이.. 이제 작은 아이는 한국학교에 입학 후 얼굴에 웃음을 찾았다. 입시가 얼마 안 남은 가운데 즐거운 학창생활이 되고, 소기의 목적한 바 좋은 결과를 내기를 바란다.
한국학교를 소개하면, 동경한국학교는 1954년 민단중앙본부 건물과 공용으로 개교하였으며 재일교포나 일본에 주재하는 뉴커머의 한국인 사업가 자제들이 다니는 현재 도쿄도 신주쿠구 와카마츠초 2-1에 위치한 이제 70년이 된 학교이다.
재일본대한민국민단이 설립을 주도한 경위로 일본 내 한국의 민족교육을 담당하는 중심적인 역할을 하고 있으며, 한국의 역사관과 국가관에 맞는 교육을 실시하고 있다. 교육과정은 대체로 한국의 일반적인 학교와 동일하다.
일본 사립학교 지위이지만 일본의 학습지도요령과 문부과학성 검정제 교과서에 얽매이지 않고 교육을 실시하고 있다. 당초 도쿄 및 그 주변에 거주하는 재일동포 자녀의 교육기관으로 설립되었으나 재일동포 사회의 고학력화와 민족교육에 대한 관심 저하가 진행됨과 동시에 한일 간 고도 경제성장과 정치경제교류로 인한 한국 주재원, 유학생, 거주자 자제가 늘어 해마다 재일동포 자녀의 비율이 감소하고 한국에서의 일시 체류자 자녀 수가 증가하고 있다.
현재 초,중,고등부의 총 학생수는 1400여 명이며 졸업생의 진학 현황은 서울대를 비롯한 유수한 대학에 대거 진학하고 있다. 유명인 출신자로는 김선아(여배우), 이국수(전 도쿄 베르디 1969 총감독), 조치훈(바둑),모리모토 키테츠(귀화 일본 국적자, 프로야구 선수), 보아(한국 가수), 지코(한국 아이돌 그룹 Block B의 리더) 등이 있다.

My beloved sons, Thank you all for your endurance and fortitude. My family has lived in Beijing, China, since 2004. My eldest son was five years old, and my younger one was born in 2006. Times passed, and we moved to Tokyo, Japan, in Aug 2018 after finishing 14 year-life in Beijing.
I had neither business relations nor acquaintances in Japan at that time. This immigration was my first motivation to travel to Japan. No one in my family could speak Japanese, so it made us stressful to communicate in daily life, especially when seeing a doctor.
My little ones feel more hardship than me. They left Beijing during their critical study season: my elder one(Soohyun) in 12th grade and my younger one(Sunghyun) in 6th grade. Therefore, they face a significant challenge in entering senior schools in Japan. By now we have lived in Tokyo for five years.
Looking back on our days, God has blessed us to pass through our family’s critical transit periods. Soohyun entered the Department of political economy science at Waseda University with high grades on SAT and Tofle. Sunghyun, through Japanese elementary and middle school, now attends High school at Tokyo Korean School. Sunghyun, once before, gave complete relief to his mind, pent-up from his blue childhood brought by sudden change due to immigration.
My beloved little ones have survived strange cultures and languages across two countries. Sunghyun got a smile back on his face. I pray that he leads his merry days in the school and does his best to achieve his future goal.
I introduce Tokyo Korean school. Tokyo Korean School was opened in 1954 at the Korean People’s Group(Mindan) headquarters in Japan. The school is now at 2-1 Wakamatsu-cho, Shinjuku-gu, Tokyo, and has almost 70year-history.
It originated with native Korean residents in Japan attending school. It is followed by Korean residents new to Japan and newcomers to Korean business people. It plays a central role in Korean national education in Japan as a way of leading the establishment of the Korean People’s Group in Japan.
It provides education tailored to Korean history and national views. The curriculum is generally the same as that of public schools in Korea. Although a Japanese private school, it provides education without being bound by Japan’s learning guidelines and the Ministry of Education and Science’s qualification textbook.
The total number of elementary, middle, and high school students is about 1,400, and graduates are entering prestigious universities, including Seoul National University. The conspicuous figures of the graduate include Kim Sun-ah (actress), Lee Gu-su (former general manager of Tokyo Verdi 1969, Jo Chi-hoon (Go player), Morimoto Kitetsu (professional baseball player), BoA (Korean singer), and Zico (leader of Korean idol group Block B).
