뉴저지 민권센터는 여러 NJ 이민자 단체 대표들과 함께 지난 3일(월) 뉴저지 주의원 2명과 온라인으로 만났습니다.
The New Jersey MinKwon Center met online with representatives from various NJ immigrant organizations and two New Jersey lawmakers on Monday, the 3rd.
한국어 서비스, 이민자 보호법 제정 촉구 NJ 주의원 면담
온라인 모임의 목적은 (1) 한국어 등 15개 국어로 주정부 서비스를 제공하는 ‘언어서비스법안(Language Access Bill/S2459) (2) 서류미비자를 비롯 이민자들이 신분에 관계 없이 추방 위협을 받지 않고 주정부나 지방 정부에 건강, 교육, 삶의 질 향상을 위한 공공서비스 지원과 보호를 요청할 수 있도록 하는 ‘이민자 보호법안(Values Act Bill/S512/A1986)’ 지지를 요청하기 위해서였습니다.
The purpose of the online meeting was to request support for the “Language Access Bill/S2459,” which provides government services in 15 languages, including Korean, and the “Values Act Bill/S512/A1986,” which allows immigrants, including those without proper documentation, to request and receive support and protection for improving their health, education, and quality of life from the state or local government without facing the threat of deportation.
이날 이민자 단체들은 리사 스웨인 하원의원과 앤소니 베레릴리 하원의원을 만났습니다. 뉴저지 민권센터 김성원 프로그램 매니저는 “특히 스웨인 의원은 이들 법안에 긍정적 입장을 밝히며 지원을 약속했다”고 밝혔습니다.

지난해 12월 문을 연 뉴저지 민권센터는 활동을 시작하면서 주의회와 정부를 상대로 한 권익 활동에 적극 나서기로 했습니다. 특히 NJ 버겐카운티의 한인과 아시안 이민자 권익 운동을 활성화시키고, 라틴계를 비롯한 타민족 이민자 커뮤니티와의 긴밀한 연대를 위해 힘을 쏟을 계획입니다.
“The New Jersey MinKwon Center, which opened its doors in December of last year, has decided to actively engage in advocacy efforts against the state legislature and government. Specifically, they plan to revitalize the Korean and Asian immigrant rights movement in NJ Bergen County and devote efforts towards building strong alliances with other immigrant communities such as the Latinx population.”
