뉴욕주정부와 의회가 예산 편성을 놓고 막바지 협상을 벌이고 있는 가운데 민권센터는 한인사회 등 아시아태평양계 커뮤니티를 위해 예산 확대를 요구하는 활동을 펼치고 있습니다.
뉴욕주 아태계 커뮤니티 예산 확대 요구
민권센터는 지난해 창립한 공정예산연맹(Equity Budget Coalition)의 활동에 참여하며 아태계 커뮤니티를 위한 예산 6650만 달러를 주정부에 요구하고 있습니다. 아태계는 뉴욕주에서 가장 급속하게 인구가 늘고 있는 커뮤니티입니다. 하지만 아태계 커뮤니티를 위한 예산은 항상 뒷전으로 밀리고 있기 때문입니다.
공정예산연맹은 (1) 100여 아태계 커뮤니티 단체들의 주민 서비스를 위해 4000만 달러 (2) 뉴욕주 아태계커뮤니티개발재단에 500만 달러 (3) 코비드-19이 아태계 주민들의 건강에 미치는 장기적 영향을 연구, 홍보, 교육하기 위한 예산 500만 달러 (4) 아태계 커뮤니티 데이타 확보와 분석을 위한 기금 500만 달러 (5) 아태계 역사 교재 마련을 위한 기금 200만 달러 책정 등을 주정부에 촉구하고 있습니다.
공정예산연맹은 또 최초의 뉴욕주 아태계 사무국 설치도 요구하는 등 이미 한참 늦은 정부의 대처를 촉구합니다.

As the New York State government and legislature engage in final negotiations over the budget, the civil rights center is advocating for an increased budget for the Asian-American and Pacific Residents(AAPI) community, including the Korean community.
The civil rights center, in collaboration with the Equity Budget Coalition established last year, is demanding a budget of $66.5 million for the AAPI community from the state government. AAPI community is the fastest-growing community in New York State, but their budget has always been sidelined.
The Equity Budget Coalition is urging the state government to allocate funds for (1) $40 million for services provided by more than 100 AAPI community organizations, (2) $5 million for the New York State AAPI Community Development Foundation, (3) $5 million to research, promote, and educate on the long-term effects of COVID-19 on AAPI residents, (4) $5 million for funding data collection and analysis for the AAPI community, and (5) $2 million for the development of AAPI history textbooks.
Furthermore, the Equity Budget Coalition is demanding the establishment of the first New York State AAPI office, urging the government to take action as it is already long overdue.
