On the 24th, the Asian Pacific Americans Voting & Organizing to Increase Civic Engagement, APA VOICE, and the MinKwon(=Civil rights) center held a press conference in Queens Richmond Hill to express their opposition to the electoral redistricting plan that divides the Indo-Caribbean and South Asian communities. The civil rights center is working in solidarity with Korean and other Asian American communities, and the press conference was attended by figures such as John Park, the executive director.
The recently announced electoral redistricting plan by the New York Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) redraws New York’s 24th Assembly district, which includes Richmond Hill and Ozone Park, but still divides Asian American communities into three separate districts. If elections were to be held under this plan, the voices of the Asian American community would not be properly represented in the legislature.
Electoral redistricting is the foundation for government policy decisions and budget support, along with the election of public officials. The civil rights center and APA VOICE will continue to strive for fair redistricting that benefits the Korean and Asian American communities.

퀸즈 리치몬드힐 선거구 재조정안 반대 회견
민권센터와 아태계정치력신장연맹(APA VOICE)은 24일 퀸즈 리치몬드힐에서 회견을 열고 인도-캐리비안과 남아시안 커뮤니티를 갈라놓는 선거구 재조정안에 반대하는 입장을 밝혔습니다. 민권센터는 한인 뿐아니라 다른 아시안 커뮤니티의 권익 활동과 연대하고 있으며 이날 회견에도 그런 취지로 존 박 사무총장(사진) 등이 참여했습니다.
최근 뉴욕주독립선거구재조정위원회(IRC)가 발표한 선거구 재조정안은 리치몬드힐과 오존파크가 포함된 뉴욕주하원 24선거구를 새로 그리면서 아시안 커뮤니티 밀집 지역을 여전히 3개의 선거구로 갈라놓았습니다. 이 지도에 따라 선거가 치러지면 아시안 커뮤니티의 목소리가 주의회에 제대로 전달될 수 없습니다.
선거구 재조정은 공직자 선출과 함께 정부 정책 결정과 예산 지원의 기초가 됩니다. 민권센터와 APA VOICE는 선거구가 한인과 아시안 커뮤니티를 위해 공정하게 그려지도록 계속 노력할 것입니다.
